U13As 6 a side tournament

On Monday afternoon the U13s Boys football team travelled to Ibstock for a 6 a side tournament.

Despite starting well and dominating proceedings, Royal Russell missed a few chances which meant we drew our first game 0-0 to Hampton. 0-0

The 2nd game same domination again but this time being more clinical against “Hall”. Keeyan Davison scored 2 whilst Justin Jervis scored to give Royal Russell a 3-0 win. 3-0

Our 3rd game of the group was against “Radnor”. We played good football passing the ball around and took an early lead with Just Jervis scoring to add to his tally. However, Radnor replied with 2 goals to take a 2-1 lead. With less than a minute to play Justin Jervis thumped home an equaliser. 2-2

Our 4th game saw us play the hosts Ibstock. It was a tough test as Ibstock made it hard to play against. Ollie Pritchard was superb at the back patrolling the defence. Ibstock took the lead, but GK Hughie Cousins played a superb pass to Justin Jervis who finished well to equalise. Xavier Mahdi then pressed the Ibstock defence and this led to Justin Jervis scoring his 2nd of the game and his 6th of the afternoon.

The final group game was against Richmond Park which were a strong side. Richmond pressed Royal Russell and stopped us getting into any rhythm from the back. This meant that GK Hughie Cousins and the defence of Ollie Pritchard, Kailan Patel and Sam Hubbard had to be on hand to keep Richmond at bay. We drew 0-0 which meant we had to see if we qualified for the semifinals.

Semi final

An unbeaten run in the group stages drawing 3 and winning 2 meant we finished 2nd and having to play Ardingly who finished top in the other group. Royal Russell started well passing the ball trying to draw Ardingly out of their shape. However, Ardingly stuck to the task at hand and got a rebound of a Hughie Cousins save. This gave them something to hang onto and as Royal Russell threw everything to get an equaliser Ardingly got 2 quick goals on the counter-attack.

A great tournament of football where the boys showed their quality playing some brilliant football and scoring some great goals. Tired legs and not making the right decisions in the semifinal cost the team in the end but an afternoon the boys enjoyed and learned a lot from the experience.
