Boys Football - Elgin League
Royal Russell U15As 2-2 Hampton School
Royal Russell knew they were going to be in for a stern test against a strong Hampton side and despite dominating the majority of possession, the U15As had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
Russell couldn’t have got off to a better start when captain Zac Brennan unleashed a goal of the season contender. Unfortunately, the camera man couldn’t capture the unstoppable effort from 25 yards out that crashed the underside of the bar and into the top corner, 1-0. The boys showed their passing qualities as they dictated the whole first half and looked in control until Hampton won a free kick just 40 yards from goal. An unusual error allowed a Hampton player to equalise, 1-1. 5 minutes later and it got even worse as the Hampton Left back whipped in a good cross and the Hampton striker headed home, 1-2. From a game that Royal Russell had full control now turned into a game we were chasing.
The 2nd half saw more of the same with Russell dominating possession and Hampton looking to threaten on the break. We got a deserved equaliser as Dylan De Gale was fouled inside the box. He got up and converted the penalty to make it 2-2. With 10 minutes to go there was almost another goal of the season contender. Stanley Moore struck a fantastic effort from 30-35 yards out and the LB was very unlucky to see his effort crash the underside of the crossbar and bounce on the line, although it looked like it had just crept in. That was the closest either side got to a winner.
Despite the result the team should be proud of the way they kept trying to pass the ball against a well drilled Hampton team. The result means a win against Bede’s could see us qualify for the next round but would need results to go our way.
